Simon and Sarah Righton from Old Farm are inviting everyone to come and discover what really happens beyond the farm gate (within reason!!). Simon says: “We really enjoy opening up our farm to the public, this will be our 6th Open Farm Sunday. You can walk around the farm trail, watch me shear the sheep, try one of our hot dogs, see our new cutting room (where we will have a butchery demonstration) and there are always plenty of animals and machines to get up close to.” Suzanne Smith-Lomas from “Happy Hounds” will be available during the day. Suzanne says “bring along your dog with a behaviour you would like to change and I’ll give you some suggestions eg. jumping up at visitors, not coming back when called, barking at the postie or all of the above! We also aim to do a clicker demo using people (always fun and safer than using dogs!!)”. Other stalls include WR Haines fruit and veg, a local molecatcher and cream teas in the afternoon. Michael and Katherine Righton from New Farm are also opening up their farm just over the road from Old Farm and are pleased to be able to show visitors behind the scenes of a modern dairy unit.
The new cutting room has been part financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development 2007-13: Europe investing in rural areas, delivered through the South West Regional Development Agency with Defra as the Managing Authority.
Caroline Drummond, Chief Executive of LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), organisers of Open Farm Sunday said: “Last year over 184,000 people visited farms on Open Farm Sunday experiencing the joy of discovering the great outdoors down on the farm. This is a day out with a real difference and so much to discover! Whatever you do at an Open Farm Sunday event on Sunday 12 June, it is a great opportunity to experience REAL farming at first hand and to meet Britain’s famers. Just as each farm is unique, each Open Farm Sunday event is unique. LEAF supports farmers with putting on an event that is not only enjoyable, but gives visitors a really fascinating insight into aspects of the countryside that they would not usually see or experience on an average day out.”
