Dorn, Moreton-in-Marsh and the Cotswolds

The immediate vicinity

Dorn is a small hamlet of only 2 farms, an old priory, and 6 other homes. 1 mile north of Moreton-in-Marsh. The 2 farms and 3 of the cottages are lived in by Rightons! Moreton-in-Marsh got it’s name in Mediaeval times (Moreton in Henmarsh – boggy land with moorhens) for obvious reasons!

Batsford Estate

The farm is one of many tenanted farms on the Batsford estate currently owned by the 3rd Lord Dulverton (Wills family). The earliest documents of the estate date back to 1648. In 1886, Algernon Bertram Freeman Mitford (1st Earl Redesdale, 2nd Creation) inherited the estate and started work on the house, gardens and arboretum and the re-building of Batsford village. A more detailed history can be found on the Batsford Arboretum website

The farmhouse dates from the 15th Century, the main part of the house was added on in the 1700’s…  It is said that when the railway cutting was excavated they found a tunnel linking the priory to the farm…

Romans at Dorn

The Celtic Dobunni tribe lived in the Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire/Warwickshire area and there was a Romano-British town covering nearly 5 hectares in the field adjoining the A429 Fosse Way. Many coins have been ploughed up over the years along with part of a column so the site has now been grassed over to protect whatever may lie beneath. There are also the remains of a small fortified camp in the show field. More information on the Romans in Dorn can be found on roman-britain.org

The surrounding area

We are only 1 mile from Moreton-in-Marsh with a variety of pubs and restaurants and there is a footpath across the fields for a 15 minute walk into town. There are some other excellent dining pubs in the area including The Horse and Groom at Bourton on the Hill (we can strongly recommend the lamb!), the Farriers Arms, Todenham, and the Howard Arms, Ilmington (National dining pub of the year 2005). Please see B&B page for information on the local taxi service as pre-booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.

Stratford, Warwick, Cheltenham and Oxford are all less than 45 minutes drive away so Old Farm is ideally situated for sight-seeing in the area. Moreton is on the London – Worceseter train line and we can arrange pick-ups from the station if you are arriving by train.
